Many ‘The Walking Dead’ fans were overjoyed when, during the show’s sixth season, Rick and Michonne intertwined fingers on a couch and realized that they cared more for each other than friends.
For years, fans “have been shipping the couple known as Richonne — and with good reason.”
Rick has something with Michonne that he never had with his first wife, Lori. There is mutual trust, a natural friendship, laughter and most importantly, open communication. If you go back and watch the first two seasons of “The Walking Dead,” you’ll see that Rick’s marriage to Lori has been on the rocks ever since the pilot. Rick confided in Shane that he and Lori were having issues and he felt like she was always mad at him.
And maybe he was right. When she believed Rick was dead, Lori quickly formed a romantic (or, at the very least, physical) relationship with Shane, as if there were always feelings between them. Even after learning of the affair, Rick stayed with Lori and the two tried to keep it all together for their son. Before his death, Lori joked about how the two couldn’t get a divorce.
So when Michonne came into the picture in Season 3, it was the first semblance of a healthy relationship Rick has had in his life. Yes, Jessie briefly entered Rick’s life in Alexandria, but she was the Michonne who Rick trusted and confided in the most. Six seasons after meeting, the two discussed starting a family of their own.
The fairytale romance came to an abrupt end when Andrew Lincoln left “The Walking Dead” in the fifth episode of the ninth season. Though he was taken away in a mysterious helicopter, Michonne, Daryl, Carol and the rest of his family and friends were left to believe that he had died saving their lives. Soon after, we learned that Rick and Michonne had a son together, Rick Jr.
For the past several years, Michonne has continued to raise RJ and Judith with the help of her community until she uncovers clues to believe Rick may still be alive. Gurira left “TWD” in Season 10, Episode 13, in search of her love with the hope of one day reuniting her family. In the 2022 series finale, Rick and Michonne appeared in a surprise ending scene to tease their upcoming series ‘TWD’.
In honor of their return to the ‘TWD’ universe and their upcoming spinoff, Insider has updated our look at the relationship that has been ongoing for several seasons.
